epson-r-d1.jpgThe world’s first rangefinder digital camera
Online Retail Price: $164.99 to $199.96

You’re serious about photography. We’re passionate about image quality. Scanning, printing and projection – digital image processing is at the heart of Epson. It’s why we continue to push the boundaries of creative possibilities. The Epson Rangefinder R-D1, the world’s first rangefinder digital camera, is where photographic tradition meets the digital culture. It is a camera to rekindle your love of photography.

The R-D1 has a large, bright, beautiful finder. It’s as good as the finders I’ve looked through in any M Leica. There are photographers who prefer rangefinders and others who prefer SLRs. Needless to say, there are pros and cons to each system. Rangefinder cameras are usually smaller, lighter and quieter than SLRs. Since they don’t use reflex mirrors, they tend to have less vibration than SLRs during exposures and this can be an asset when working hand-held at slow shutter speeds.

The old-style controls are wonderful, with all the information you usually see on an LCD screen presented on analog gauges and dials: white balance settings, capture mode, number of remaining photos, and battery power. The shutter speed dial includes an aperture priority auto-exposure mode as well as exposure compensation settings that range from -2.0 EV to +2.0 EV. Lift the shutter speed dial and rotate it to choose your ISO setting (200, 400, 800, or 1,600). Aside from the aperture priority setting, the R-D1 is a manual camera: You’ll need to set both the shutter speed and the aperture, based on either the in-camera meter or a handheld meter.

1.0x viewfinder – to view subject as though looking with your naked eye

Sony Cyber-shot DSC G1

sony-dsc-g1.jpgCyber-shot® Digital Still Camera G1
Online Retail Price: $399.99

Revolutionize the way you shoot and share photos with the 6.0 megapixel DSC-G1 Cyber-shot® digital camera. Boasting a massive 2GB2 of internal memory, you can store up to 7,500 images at VGA resolution or 600 full-resolution photos. Take remarkable pictures day or night with built-in 9-point auto focus and twilight mode which automatically adjusts the settings for beautifully clear photos. And you can review your photos on the massive 3.5″ XtraFine™ LCD screen2.

The G1 unit is the ideal vacation camera with 2GB of internal memory, saving you from having to manage extra media cards. It becomes a virtual photo album in your pocket as it can store up to 7,500 VGA-quality photos or 600 6-megapixel pictures. If additional storage is needed, the camera’s capacity can be expanded with an optional Memory Stick Duo ™ media card or Memory Stick PRO Duo ™ card, now available in capacities up to eight gigabytes.

A sticker on front of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G1 declares that this is a Wi-Fi certified camera. The G1 is compliant with the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standard, enabling it to connect to any DNLA-enabled device via a wireless LAN. In addition, Ad-hoc mode allows you to share your photos with up to 4 other Sony G1 cameras without having to be inside a wireless hotspot. Pressing the WLAN button on top of the camera automatically establishes a wireless network for the other cameras to connect to. You can then take a picture and simultaneously share it with another camera, or choose existing pictures to exchange and transfer. If you already have a wireless access point, you can connect to the network and share images with other DNLA devices e.g. a DLNA TV set or a computer. I didn’t have another Sony G1 to test the sharing features, but the camera did find the wireless network and download images onto my laptop with no problems.

In addition, the G1 operates as an MP3 player. Happy irony of ironies, unlike Sony’s players it doesn’t adhere to Sony’s proprietary ATRAC/ATRAC3 formats, instead supporting simple drag-and-drop file copying. The sound is fine, but given the limited 2GB of memory (which your music has to share with your photo albums) and minimal playback controls–shuffle or linear playback in directory order, with no playlists–it becomes just another awkward convergence device. On the other hand, the ability to use any of your numerous MP3 files as background music for the G1’s very nice slide shows gets addictive.

Agfa ePhoto CL30

Posted on February 14th, 2008 under Agfa ePhoto | No Comment

agfa-ephoto-cl30.jpgThe stylish and compact CL30 offers an image resolution of 1.5 million pixels using PhotoGenie™ technology, and features both an optical viewfinder and 1.8″ color LCD screen — perfect for framing shots or playing them back. The LCD screen features an on and off switch, so you can make the most of your power supply. You can also store up to 36 images on the removable 4MB CompactFlash memory card. In addition, the CL30 includes both USB and serial downloading capabilities.

Perfect for framing shots or playing them back. The LCD screen features an “on” and “off” switch, so the user can make the most of his or her power supply and extend the life of the batteries. The digital camera operates on four AA-sized alkaline batteries and ships with a 40MB Clik!(TM) disk - enough capacity to store between 60 and 360 images, depending on the resolution setting

Some of the plastic on the rear of the camera feels a little bit cheap, but the buttons and switches all work well. There’s a 2x digital zoom (an optical zoom would be infinitely preferable), and the flash has four modes, including fill in and red-eye reduction. Top resolution is 1152 x 864, and the images produced are pretty respectable, with good colour balance and detail both indoors and out.

There’s no zoom lens: the so-called ‘digital zoom’ just chops down to the centre of the picture. Although the picture quality is okay, Agfa claims a top resolution of 1440 x 1080 pixels at the PhotoGenie setting. But we saw no real difference between the snaps taken at this setting and the next one down, 1152 x 864. Also, at that setting you can fit 120 pictures on one disk. This is an adequate resolution for printouts up to normal photo size, but your pictures will look grainy if you want them any bigger. What’s more, all these pictures are ompressed JPEGs. With 40Mb of storage available on each disk, surely Agfa could ave offered an uncompressed option.

Specifications:
