Online Retail Price: $199.99

Capture smiles as they happen. The 7.2 megapixel Cyber-shot® W120 features innovative Smile Shutter technology which photographs smiles as they happen. Built to impress, this model boasts a Carl Zeiss® 4x optical zoom lens for high quality close-ups and Sony’s Double Anti-Blur solution for crisp, clear images. Also available in blue, black and pink.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W120 is a fine compact camera. Its quick performance, good picture quality, and surprisingly robust feature set make it a solid choice in the budget category. However, the Cyber-shot DSC-W130 dwarfs it in nearly every way. For about $30 more, you can get a camera with a higher resolution, quicker performance, and many onboard editing tools.

The 7.2-megapixel Sony DSC-W120 features an f/2.8-5.8, 32mm-128mm (35mm equivalent) 4x Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom lens and a 115,000- dot, 2.5-inch LCD. In addition to its LCD, the camera incorporates an optical viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and Sony’s Bionz image processing engine. Notable features include face detection that can now be set to detect only children or only adults; a new version of Sony’s Smile Shutter, which automatically takes a shot when someone smiles and can now be set for child or adult priority; an Easy Shooting mode that enlarges menu text and makes only basic controls available; and a semi-manual focus mode that lets the photographer select the approximate distance to the subject then uses autofocus to finish the job. The camera also includes Sony’s D-Range Optimizer, automatic exposure bracketing, a top light-sensitivity setting of ISO 3200, spot and center-weighted metering modes, a live histogram, and three selectable flash output levels. The W120 can record smooth VGA video with sound, and is compatible with Sony’s optional VMC-HD1 high-definition component cable (street: $40) for 1080i photo output to an HDTV.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC G1

sony-dsc-g1.jpgCyber-shot® Digital Still Camera G1
Online Retail Price: $399.99

Revolutionize the way you shoot and share photos with the 6.0 megapixel DSC-G1 Cyber-shot® digital camera. Boasting a massive 2GB2 of internal memory, you can store up to 7,500 images at VGA resolution or 600 full-resolution photos. Take remarkable pictures day or night with built-in 9-point auto focus and twilight mode which automatically adjusts the settings for beautifully clear photos. And you can review your photos on the massive 3.5″ XtraFine™ LCD screen2.

The G1 unit is the ideal vacation camera with 2GB of internal memory, saving you from having to manage extra media cards. It becomes a virtual photo album in your pocket as it can store up to 7,500 VGA-quality photos or 600 6-megapixel pictures. If additional storage is needed, the camera’s capacity can be expanded with an optional Memory Stick Duo ™ media card or Memory Stick PRO Duo ™ card, now available in capacities up to eight gigabytes.

A sticker on front of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G1 declares that this is a Wi-Fi certified camera. The G1 is compliant with the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standard, enabling it to connect to any DNLA-enabled device via a wireless LAN. In addition, Ad-hoc mode allows you to share your photos with up to 4 other Sony G1 cameras without having to be inside a wireless hotspot. Pressing the WLAN button on top of the camera automatically establishes a wireless network for the other cameras to connect to. You can then take a picture and simultaneously share it with another camera, or choose existing pictures to exchange and transfer. If you already have a wireless access point, you can connect to the network and share images with other DNLA devices e.g. a DLNA TV set or a computer. I didn’t have another Sony G1 to test the sharing features, but the camera did find the wireless network and download images onto my laptop with no problems.

In addition, the G1 operates as an MP3 player. Happy irony of ironies, unlike Sony’s players it doesn’t adhere to Sony’s proprietary ATRAC/ATRAC3 formats, instead supporting simple drag-and-drop file copying. The sound is fine, but given the limited 2GB of memory (which your music has to share with your photo albums) and minimal playback controls–shuffle or linear playback in directory order, with no playlists–it becomes just another awkward convergence device. On the other hand, the ability to use any of your numerous MP3 files as background music for the G1’s very nice slide shows gets addictive.

BenQ DC E520

benq-dc-e520.jpgThe DC E520 digital camera is aimed at young professionals on- the-go. The feature-packed DC E520 incorporates a 5 megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom, high-resolution, large-oversized 2.5″ LTPS LCD screen, VGA movie recording and extra long battery life all in a thin 21mm package. On-the-go users will be pleased with the DC E520’s high resolution oversized 2.5″ LTPS LCD screen that yields precise and comfortable viewing of photos in high resolution. The DC E520 also features VGA movie recording at 30fps with AVI (MPEG4) format, which ensures high quality movie clips. A digital stabilizer function is also supported during recording. Attractively thin at 21mm, the DC E520 is designed with comfort and portability in mind. Aside from its brushed steel exterior, it features BenQ’s intuitive Easy-Dial User Interface, which allows users to choose without complication from various options. A high-capacity 1230mAh battery allows users to enjoy their trips without the pressure of constant recharging.

The camera is easy to operate, but suffers from a few annoying quirks. The power button must be held down for one second before the camera springs into life, which is a nuisance when you need to take a shot quickly. The shutter sound played through the speaker is useful to confirm when a picture has been taken, but the constant beeps for every button press are annoying. We would have liked audible confirmation for when the auto-focus has locked on to its subject, but none is given. Also absent is the ability to adjust shutter speed and aperture settings manually, although there are white balance, ISO speed and metering options plus various scene presets.

Agfa ePhoto CL50

Posted on February 17th, 2008 under Agfa ePhoto | No Comment

agfa-ephoto-cl50.jpgAgfa has both a wealth of experience in conventional photography and a consistently strong range of digital cameras. With the ePhoto CL50, the company has eschewed the unconventional shape of the 1680 featured in the last digital camera Labs (issue 51) in favour of a more traditional shape. It won’t win any design awards, but it does feel comfortable to hold.

The view from the top showing the overall “rounded” styling of the camera. There is no positive fingergrip area except for a small rubberized strip on the front for your fingertips. I tended to always be semi-dropping it if not held firmly, be sure to use the wrist strap! The status display on top tells you the usual things, pictures remaining, image quality, flash mode, macro mode, battery power remaining. You’ll note the four unmarked buttons along the top. They are (left to right): Macro/selftimer, QuickReview, Flash mode and Image Resolution.

The camera ePhoto CL50 has traditional for Agfa the form, however it the design and functional features if not is cardinal, rather hardly are advanced. Bent forward and reverse sides with a LCD-screen are looked by a uniform element and it as a whole has the completed and functional kind. The camera has practically no inertia LCD-screen with a diagonal in 5,1 sm (2 inches), which is possible to use as the range viewfinder. “Opening” door above a screen substitutes illumination per sun day and, accordingly, saves energy of batteries.

The CL50 certainly has some nice touches - the high level of control over its settings, the use of natural light to illuminate the LCD and the high level of zoom - but it can’t match the style and ease of use of the Canon PowerShot A50. What’s more, with a street price of around £400, the Minolta DimÅge is cheaper, has better image quality, and unlike the CL50 comes with a mains adaptor as standard.
